Danish indie rock outfit Figurines revel in the sounds of classic psych pop, with no little debt owed to the likes of the Zombies and the Beach Boys. More accurately, Figurines might be compared to American-bred Elephant 6 progeny like Of Montreal. Influences and affiliations aside, these Danes make quirky, melody-rich pop that can border, at times, on the elaborate and orchestral, at others on the charmingly simplistic. WHEN THE DEER WORE BLUE is a superb example of Figurines' lush, sunshine-dappled psychedelia. The disc contains enough twists and turns to keep the jaded engaged, and enough inescapable hooks to capture everyone else.
