In 1977 Progressive Records (under the direction of Gus Statiras) organized and recorded four different jam sessions featuring veterans and younger players on a specific instrument jamming together. For this recording the tenors of Scott Hamilton, Flip Phillips, Ray Turner, Peter Loeb, Frank Sokolow and Bennie Wallace (accompanied by guitarist Howie Collins, pianist Derek Smith, bassist George Mraz and drummer Ronnie Bedford) perform a seven-song ballad medley and a 16-minute uptempo "Gus' Flower" (based on "Honeysuckle Rose"). Some of the music works better than others and the closing ensemble chorus on "Gus' Flower" (with all of the tenors playing together wildly) is a humorous mess. ~ Scott Yanow
