National Health is an English band that performed progressive rock music and is primarily associated with Canterbury. The band was founded in 1975 by keyboardists Dave Stewart (from Hatfield and the North) and Alan Gowan (from Gilgamesh). The band also includes guitarists Phil Miller and Phil Lee (also from Gilgamesh), as well as bassist Mont Campbell (from Egg). The band got its name thanks to Stewart's glasses issued by the National Health Service. Initially, the drummer of the band was Bill Bruford (before that, the drummer of Yes and King Crimson), but he was soon replaced by drummer Pip Pyle. Campbell was also replaced first by Neil Murray, and later by John Greaves (from Henry Cow). Vocalist Amanda Parsons became the voice of the band. The first album, called "National Health", was released in 1978. The music on the disc was a complex and superbly played jazz-rock, consisting of lengthy, mostly instrumental, complexly structured compositions, much superior in "wrapping" compositions of such, for example, famous Canterbury musicians as Caravan.
