Quang Tran began his formal training in clarinet at the age of fourteen under the instruction of Dr. Vu Dinh Thach at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. In January 2013, he earned his Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance with an excellent final grade from the Boyer College of Music of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a student of Mr. Paul Demers, member of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Quang Tran’s other teachers are Dr. John Scott, retired professor at University of North Texas, Mr. Gregory Raden, the principal clarinetist of Dallas Symphony.
Quang Tran has appeared as a soloist with Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra and Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra. A prolific orchestral musician, Mr. Quang has performed as principle clarinetist with orchestras such as Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, South East Asian Youth Symphony Orchestra (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006), American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Canton International Summer Music Academy Orchestra in China (2006, 2007), Asian Youth Orchestra (2008, 2010, 2013), and Temple Symphony Orchestra. In January and February of 2013, Mr. Quang was invited to join the China National Symphony Orchestra for its thirty-concert tour around the United States.
Quang Tran was selected to participate in the International Clarinet Concourse Markneurkichen in Germany in May 2006. He won first prize at the Asian Symphonic Band Competition in Thailand in November 2005 as a member of the Hanoi Student Wind Quintet. He won the Concerto Competition at the University of North Texas in 2018. Other awards include a scholarship from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency to study at Malmö Academy of Music in Sweden, a scholarship from the Wes Benson Fund to study at the Boyer College of Music, and a Vietnamese government scholarship which enabled Quang to obtain his Master’s degree in the United States.
Quang Tran has taught clarinet at Vietnam National Academy of Music and at several other music schools in Hanoi. He is currently the Teachings Assistant and pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Clarinet Performance at the University of North Texas under the tutelage of Dr. Kimberly Cole-Luevano.
