Devil’s Machinery, the long awaited album from Grant Stevens, is a bluesy, rocky affair full of great hooks, dirty guitars and the never less than emotionally convincing voice of the singer himself.
Nine self penned songs and one remake. When you cover a song, it’s always good to aim high and shooting higher than Bob Dylan would be hard to imagine. Stevens’ take on a recent Dylan song “I’ve made up my mind to give myself to you” evokes how a young folk singer in the early sixties may have approached his work.
The blues wail of “25 to life”, raw guitars and growling vocals on “The Devil’s Machinery” and the sheer power of “V8 Sandman”, which reached #7 on the AMRAP Metro Charts, get the album out of the starting blocks firing on all cylinders and the intensity stays intact until the last note of “The Salvo Lady”, which closes the album with a sound of hope and love.
Veteran star producer Steve James adds his unmistakable rock handiwork to “Melancholy Blue” and “Tonight we take it slow” with all other tracks produced by Micki Meuser, the whole thing overseen by executive producer Don Esteban.
