DJ Kainga - Digital Indigenous 02 Oo M P 3 (2021)

Recorded in Mawaya Studio, Zomba, Southern Malawi. DJ Kainga lives in Zomba, the historical place in Southern Malawi, shared by 3 ethnic groups: Lomwe, Chewa and Yao. The producer identifies with Lomwe and in his music he blends electro, dancehall and local Lomwe rhythms, melodies and, most importantly, sonic atmosphere. Therefore, the music style is sometimes referred as Lomwe beat. Kainga, real name Sandson Kainga, started his studio in 2013, and since then gathered recognition in Zomba area especially among Lomwe fans. He champions in rearranging the elements of the Lomwe music culture with new technologies. His main inspiration is the local music, ie. Nkasa and Thomas Chibade, who are not very known outside Malawi. As many Malawian musicians, he also enjoys gospel music from South Africa. Historically, Lomwe people, after they migrated into territory of the todays Malawi in XIXth century, experienced marginalisation as precarious class in the region. Throughout their emancipation, they kept elements of their performative culture.
