Driven by composer Dan Langa, the experimental collective Fugue State presents "After Nothing Comes," an album exploring deconstruction, erasure, and sonic spectrality, drawing conceptual parallels to Robert Rauschenberg’s historical erasure of a William De Kooning drawing. The work relies on the radical digital reworking and recontextualization of live performances by prominent Brooklyn musicians, including Shahzad Ismaily and Peni Candra Rini. It serves as an audio adaptation of visual artist Aidan Koch’s graphic novel of the same name, which similarly meditates on disappearance. Through intricate studio manipulations, Ableton editing, and the inclusion of raw studio chatter, the project blurs the lines between authentic human performance, artificial deconstruction, and deliberate staging, resulting in an elusive, highly complex sonic ecosystem.
