Carl Filipiak and the Jimi Jazz Band - Live at the Cat's Eye (2013)

Liner Notes: This new album, Carl Filipiak & the Jimi Jazz Band Live at the Cat’s Eye Pub, recorded on two different nights over two years, documents those musical breakthroughs. Tenor saxophonist Paul Hannah and drummer Frank Young were there for all three nights, while three different bassists—Mike Pope, Steve Zerlin and Matt Everhart—contributed to the recordings. And Jimi Hendrix’s spirit was there every night. “When I was a teenager,” Carl recalls, “I loved both the Beatles and Miles Davis, but I couldn’t figure out how to put them together. Then Hendrix came along and showed the way. Like the Beatles he could strip down a song so it could make its point in three or four minutes. At the same time, like Miles, he could stretch and twist the music inside out. He had the improvisational creativity of a great jazz musician, but he’s coming from a blues framework, like a rock musician.
