The Viennese horn, as Wikipedia informs us, is "a special design of the French horn", a simple F horn with a narrower scale than a double horn. It sounds "softer" and at the same time "darker" and is still part of the specific Viennese sound style cultivated by the orchestras there. The (Viennese) horn player Peter Dorfmayr and colleagues from the Wiener Symphoniker have taken on Mozart's four horn concertos "for the chamber": Dorfmayr is accompanied by a string quintet and a harpsichord.
