Recorded in 1989 with Günther Herbig and the Philharmonia Orchestra, Rachmaninov’s third piano concerto has been described by the pianist as the “ultimate challenge” for a female performer due to its demanding big octaves, though it is sailed through with disconcerting ease and musicianship by Cécile Ousset. This recording also includes the original 1913 version of Rachmaninov’s second piano sonata.
