Hendrik Hofmeyr’s twelve sonatas for various instruments from the vibraphone to the double bass constitute a substantial part of his oeuvre. This engagement with the genre stems partly from his interest in the specific expressive and technical potentialities of individual instruments, but also forms part of his deliberate championing of thematic discourse as a vital and fascinating component of the musical argument and an alternative to the athematicism which characterised the historical avant-garde.
