Born as Pedro Ample Candel, he chose the nickname Ruy-Blas given his admiration for the work of Victor Hugo Ruy Blas, recording in 1970 his first album as a solo singer, with which he achieved an important success in Spain with the song titled A those that hurt love, which over the years has become a classic of Spanish popular music.
He began his prolific musical career being just a teenager. First he was part of groups such as Los Princes and Los Grimm with whom he recorded his first albums for the Philips company. Shortly after, he was part of the legendary group Los Canarios (1968) during the time when his director, Teddy Bautista, was serving in the military. It was at the end of his work with this group when he recorded Those Who Hurt Love, produced by Alain Milhaud. The second single disc of the then known as Pedro Ruy-Blas, entitled My voice is love, was banned by the censorship of the old regime to consider the subject subversive.
It was from that moment when Pedro oriented his career towards jazz. He founded the fusion and jazz-rock group Dolores with young musicians such as Jorge Pardo, drummer José Antonio Galicia, Rubem Dantas and pianist Tomás San Miguel, among others. In this formation, we discovered Pedro as an excellent drummer and percussionist. They record several albums for Polydor, such as Full Moon, Dolores, La Puerta Abierta, and Asa-Nisi-Masa. Soon after, Dolores became one of the most important groups in the history of progressive music in Spain, and so the collaboration with maestro Paco de Lucía arose, thus promoting a new era in flamenco.
Since 1980, Pedro Ruy-Blas resumes his career as a solo singer, and recorded for the New Media label the album titled Madre Ciudad.(google)
