Manu Dibango - Makossa Man (1973)

Makossa Man is a 1973 afro-funk album recorded in Paris by Cameroonian artist Manu Dibango. The record was released on the Fiesta label in France, after which it found a wider audience in the US in 1974 thanks to Atlantic Records. Atlantic issued the project on the heels of the massive American success of Dibango's previous hit, "Soul Makossa." This strategic release included the bonus track "Pêpê Soup" to capitalize on the artist's popularity during his 1973 tour. The recording, which showcased Dibango's skills as a multi-instrumentalist, featured a diverse lineup of musicians on bass, drums, guitar, and percussion. The album remains a definitive example of his early heavy funk sound, distinct from his later disco-influenced work. Since the material was drawn from the same 1973 studio sessions as other European releases like "O Boso," the album is a key component of the artist's complex and fragmented discography.
