The three drummers Steiner, Friedli and Wolf realized an interesting project in spring 2021. You can read here what this is all about.
Christoph Steiner, Lionel Friedli and Nicolas Wolf meet in the spring of 21 with their percussion instruments in the studio of artist Niklaus Wenger in the studio house ‹Fabrik› in Burgdorf to improvise for an afternoon. The Covid crisis still has the cultural landscape in a paralyzing grip at this point in time and yet – or perhaps because of this – the space for the collaboration of these three rhythm artists is created.
A camera and two microphones rotate between the three drums set up in a circle, recording the musical events in rotation. Thus, the focus of the music changes constantly. The rotation of image and sound creates three-dimensional drum music for the listener and viewer, which allows the playing of the three drummers to merge and at the same time repeatedly focuses on the different ways of expression. Tonmeister Matthias Wenger only used two microphones that rotated with the camera and created an independent sound experience with his extremely sensitive mix.
The eight improvised pieces show the three different drummer characters at eye level and above all at ear level. The exorbitant dynamic range, the variety of sounds and the careful and accurate improvisational language create an amazing world of sound. Although three drummers act out of the moment here, coherent compositions have emerged that show a formal logic or also move very freely.
