Juan Pablo Torres - Identidad (2010)

personnel :

Juan Pablo Torres - trombone, arranger
Jorge Arrote - piano
Edward Magdariaga - bass
Reiner Guerra - drums

Torres recorded this on the road, and it's a stripped down quartet date, just him and a working trio. That means there's not much scope, the sort of thing that blesses his normal recordings. And inside almost every Cuban jazz musician lurks the soul of a fusion player wishing they could have played in Mahavishnu or Chick Corea's fusion bands; "Pero Quién" is loaded with fusion-esq writing. Torres is good enough on trombone to take the lead in longer improvising, and the band sounds flexible, worked in. Jorge Arrote, the pianist, sounds strong, pushing chromatic phrases through the static harmony. Recommended.
