Michael Burke's "Blues from Mars" takes listeners through a wide range of sounds, reflecting the guitarist/singer's varied musical experience. It's not so much that this particular kind of blues sounds like it's from outer space, as it is that it covers such a huge range of stylistic territory that there's no other way to describe it. The album kicks off with the psychedelic blues of "Life on Mars," and then launches into the Buddy Guy-inspired "Combustion Blues." Then, following the John Lee Hooker-esque "Crawl Through the Desert" it plunges into the abyss with Hazy Day Blues. The collection takes you to hell, heartache and dystopia, but then brings you to back to Heaven with its closer, "Lightning in a Clear Blue Sky" - a Hendrix-style vision of the Second Coming of Jesus. Colored by Burke's baritone voice and wild and varied guitar sounds, Blues on Mars paints a technicolor picture of how every human emotion and experience has come together to forge the music that blues fans love.
