Joyce - Ilha Brasil (1996)

In the first sound heard through this album, the listener would be put at a typical gafieira ball in Rio: the best orchestral tradition in Brazil, which mixes the strong rhythmic/melodic Brazilian tradition with the orchestral achievements from the jazz big bands and Caribbean grooves. The album opens with a hot, hot, hot samba, followed by a mild son/samba groove. The rest of the wonderful selection of Joyce's originals consists of samba, American grooves, some jazzy solos, embolada-baião, doleful modinha and samba-canção. Deserve especial mention her expressive jazzy vocalise in her "Feijão com arroz," followed by hot jazz solos. Excellent acoustic production with some of the best musicians of Brazil, great compositions and Joyce's wonderful, swinging vocal interpretation.
