Te Whanganui-a-Tara's seven member Recitals have unveiled their Flying Nun debut album Orbit I just in time for tonight's Tāmaki Makaurau launch party with special guests She's So Rad and Green Grove. Carefully crafted by bandmates Xanthe Rook, Sam Curtiss, Olivia Wilding, Carla Camilleri, Josh Finegan, Christian Dimick and Tharushi Bowatte, Orbit I was recorded in "studios, various bedrooms and houses" — helped by a team of production gurus including Harry Lilley, Dave Carter, Alexandra Corbett and James Goldsmith (who also mixed the record).
Arising from feelings "of (and towards); love, mandated self reflection, climate change, feminist theology, interconnectivity, projection and erotic fantasy" the nine song collection is a multi-faceted gemstone of majestic, sometimes almost wildly cacophonous instrumental arrangements and lyrically vivid, heart-bursting songcraft. Roaming from delicate psych-folk balladry, craggy noise-scapes, mind-boggling math-rock passages and contemplative ambience (often in the same tune).
