Count Basie was among the most important bandleaders of the swing
era. With the exception of a brief period in the early 50s, he led a
big band from 1935 until his death almost 50 years later, and the
band continued to perform after he died. Basie's orchestra was
characterized by a light, swinging rhythm section that he led from
the piano, lively ensemble work, and generous soloing. Basie was not
a composer like Duke Ellington or an important soloist like Benny
Goodman. His instrument was his band, which was considered the
epitome of swing and became broadly influential on jazz.

While French RCA put out a three-LP set documenting 48 of Count
Basie's recordings for that label during 1947-50, its American
counterpart instead just reissued 21 of those sides (all from 1947)
on this highly enjoyable CD. Best are the octet and nonet recordings
of May 20-21 but none of these tracks are weak. Trumpeter Harry
Sweets Edison, the tenors of Paul Gonsalves and Buddy Tate and the
long underrated baritonist Jack Washington star, along with vocalist
Jimmy Rushing and the rhythm section. Even during what is sometimes
written off as a declining period, the Basie orchestra was near the
top in quality, if not popularity.
