Pianist David Arnay's debut as a leader has some songs that are based as much on the rhythmic groove as on the melody or chord changes. There are also some melancholy ballads and a few heated pieces although most of the music has an introspective and lightly grooving feel to it. Tenor saxophonist Bennie Maupin has some good spots, particularly on the second line-oriented "The Mighty Dollar" and "Home Again," and tenor and alto saxophonist Bob Sheppard helps out on a few numbers. The tunes are reasonably enjoyable but rarely command one's attention or stand out, making one wish that Arnay utilized stronger material on his debut. However he displays a lot of potential and the overall results are enjoyable enough if not essential.~Scott Yanow
