Matti Oiling was best known as the leader of the Oiling Boiling Rhythm 'n Blues Band. They backed a whole list of vocalists including Blues Mama, Brown Sugar Dixon and Caron Barnes, as well as top Finns Pepe Ahlqvist and Eero Raittinen. In addition to club concerts, the group often performed in churches.

The highlight of Oiling's recording career was "Hip-Hop-Boogaloo-Blues" (2001), an album canned with Blues Mama Brown Sugar Dixon. It was the first-ever Scandinavian rhythm 'n blues album to reach the Gold Disc limit (a minimum of 20,000 units sold).

A young Matti Oiling started his professional career with Onni Gideon, another Finnish legend, who was - strangely enough - the leader in Hawaiian-influenced music in Finland. A little later Oiling joined a Beatles-inspired pop group Jormas.

"Let the good times roll" was the name of the game soon after. Oiling recorded a landmark LP "Happy Jazz Band" with his own ensemble in 1970 -- a career in rhythm 'n blues had started.

The beloved Oiling Boiling Rhythm 'n Blues Band toured extensively both home and abroad, earning nicknames like "Finland's R 'n B National Team" and "University of Rhythm". Mr Oiling himself, in the spirit of the Dukes and the Counts, was often called "The Emperor".

Gene Krupa and Earl Palmer were among Matti Oiling's biggest influences. Palmer was also a good personal friend of his.

"There have been drummers before us, and there will be after us. We are just a link in a long chain of drummers", Matti Oiling used to teach his fellow drummers and drummers-to-be.
