Izumi Kimura - Invisible Resistances (2022)

‘Invisible Resistances’ is a new CD of improvised explorations featuring piano by Izumi Kimura and violin & viola by Cora Venus Lunny - nine dazzling improvisations that further push the dialogue between these two performers creating new sonic experiences that are intimate, yet bold and elemental.

Izumi Kimura and Cora Venus Lunny are two rare and precious musicians. Both virtuosos on their instruments, they have - as one can readily hear - a deep knowledge of the history of music interpretation composed over the centuries. That alone is already an enormous achievement! But what makes them all the more rare is that they have also boldly ventured into the challenge and far riskier musical field of open improvisation, nourished by their musical cultures, languages, dreams, tales and stories heard in childhood, early novels, films, landscapes, and of course the musical realms. Thus, instead of laying chamber music that a score would dictate, they start a music from nothing and free themselves to invent a chamber music that's completely unique. Invisible Resistances is a gem to be discovered. This music was recorded in the early spring of 2021.
We were walking in a tunnel we didn’t know how long.
With eyes closed we listened inwards to our silence.
From this space an interaction began.
A single light became thousands of sea fireflies and the stars in the deep sky.
We listened to what have been lodged inside us for more than our lifetime, very old melodies, 
celestial stories, the tide, the wind, invisible forces and a chant.
We improvised.
Something happened in this space which we didn’t know till we listened to it back, much later. 3 hours of music was recorded spontaneously and now we have made this album for you. (Izumi Kimura, Wicklow, September 9th 2022)
