The Elijah McLaughlin Ensemble is a Chicago-based trio who meld American primitive guitar styles with vanguard jazz and modern classical music. McLaughlin is the group's composer and plays acoustic six- and 12-string guitars, and his bandmates include Jason Toth on upright bass and Joel Styzens on hammered dulcimer. Their self-titled debut album was issued by Water Glyphs in August 2020. The band's second album -- comprised of various McLaughlin compositions -- was rehearsed and recorded for over a year in four long improvisatory sessions at Chicago's Fine Arts Building on a vintage Tascam 1/2" tape machine. The album was recorded at the fine arts building in Chicago to an 8 channel analog tape machine, and care was taken to capture "live" takes when possible. The album was engineered/mixed by Caleb Willitz, and mastered by Carl Saff.
