Each one of my Unseen Rain recordings have featured a side of my improvising personality, from the standards of Film Noir to the wild free jazz of Blood River Shaman. For this latest trio recording I decided to focus on my own compositions. I’ve been writing tunes as well as classical pieces since I was in my late teens. Most of my tunes are either sketches for free improvs or ECM style acoustic jazz. The tunes on this recording span my whole career from 1979 to now. They feature tunes inspired by Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett to more conceptual free tunes like “Particle Momentum”, which uses set theory as a starter, and “Daylight! Red Flower” which is an algorithmic composition based on fractals. There are even two tunes based on standards, “Kacey’s Day” (based on Night and Day) and the homage to victims of violence, “Say Their Names” (based on a dark reharmonization of All the Things You Are). Over all, the recording is meant to take the listener on a journey through variety of moods, from the somber tone poem “November Air” to the open-hearted, child-like “Innocence”, the freebop of Daylight! Red Flower, the heaven-storming Eternal Rising or the rollicking tribute to Paul Bley, Surprised by Joy. I hope the journey proves worthwhile. - Chris Forbes
