Montreal Jazz trumpet legend Kevin Dean offers us a glimpse into composing, which he refers to as "improvising in slow motion". Dean discusses the rudimentary building blocks of any good composition, suggesting that "you can drop your shoe on the piano, and start with that".

Dean is accompanied by his band of 25 years; Alec Walkington on bass, Dave Laing on drums, and Montreal Jazz polyvalent Andre White, here setting aside the drums for piano.

Dean cites the composition as an integral part of a contemporary Jazz musician's musical identity, and is coy when asked how other players regard his compositions, joking "what other people think of my music is none of my business!"
