Mind the Gap, originally released in 1995, was the recording that gained Kíla attention in the UK. Described by the Irish Times as displaying a ‘subversive intelligence’, the album sparkled with invention. Perhaps it was the many other bands Kíla’s music brought to mind that did the trick – Dr Strangely Strange, Alan Stivell, Pink Floyd, The Incredible String Band, Cowboy Junkies and many others.
The album was produced by Rod Callan, a long time collaborator of Ronnie Wood's, and his unique sense of the obscure and oddness coupled with Kíla’s constant craving for invention proved to be the perfect mix.
The album showcased the growth of Rónán Ó Snodaigh’s songwriting with the utterly beguiling Féach – a curious blend of rap and folk. It also captured his brother Colm’s intense vocal on Sean Deora and his rather remarkable tune composition perfectly showcased on the opening track Tickelled. Fiddle player Dee provided her first recorded composition with the haunting Finnegan and a minimalist remix of this also occurred on the album in Juno Humm.
Mind The Gap won much praise when it was released and set Kíla up for their next transition – the immense Tóg é go Bog é which launched them onto the International festival and concert scene.
