They were once thought of as completely separate, but there are now definite connections between the jazz scenes of some American and European cities. The album MAATJES is the result of collaborations between cutting-edge performers from Chicago and Holland. Netherlands expatriate Jorrit Dijkstra (alto saxophone, electronics) got together with trombonist Jeb Bishop (Vandermark 5), cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm (Vandermark 5 and many jazz, rock, and improvisational contexts), and others for a fusion of free jazz interplay and minimalist trancelike patterns.~Mark Keresman
