Petersen's Third Symphony in C-sharp minor was premiered in Darmstadt in 1934 under the direction of Karl Friderich; another performance followed in Berlin on September 24, 1935 under Hermann Abendroth. The present recording is the first made of this work. Petersen wrote a brief factual commentary on his Third Symphony for the September 1935 issue of Zeitschrift für Musik. Only in a few places does the text deviate from a matter-of-fact sequence of the events and, with terms like "tragic climax," "collapse," "delicate "collapse," "tender declaration" to indicate the "content" of the music.
