Outstanding among the latest sensations of Parisian jazz is the sensual, honeyed voice of the singer Sarah Lenka, winner of the prestigious SACEM Award – the French equivalent of the American Grammy – for the New Voice of 2007 and christened by the delighted critics as “the new French jazz singer”, a real honour for a performer who says she sings inspired by Bessie Smith and Billie Holliday. Her performances of a set of songs inspired, as is the case with all the best-loved jazzmen and jazzwomen, by the most extreme aspects of love relationships are seasoned with a sense of humour but also mystery and sweetness. In her prolific career, she has performed successfully at venues in the French capital and has also opened for Taj Mahal. Sarah Lenka also has the support of a true master of the trumpet, the Briton Damon Brown, as the fortunate fans who go to the Jamboree will be able to see.
”Mahala” is the meeting between Sarah Lenka and 3 committed women artists. A feminine Ep, a cultural mix: with NaÏssam Jalal, Franco-Syrian flautist, Awa Ly, Franco-Senegalese singer & Macha Gharibian Franco-Armenian pianist. An unexpected meeting, which mixes a folk acoustic sound with the sounds of traditions and customs.
Each carries within it a cultural heritage, a history. A journey into the intimate with carte blanche to these 3 guests who join this repertoire, sublimating it bringing a more organic & ancestral dimension. Between strength and emotions. Surrounded by her guitar/drums/percussion trio. A return to basics, to a form of the essential.
