The Vienna people Tenor saxophonist and composer SWANTJE LAMBERT and her trio create their own exciting jazz language on their new album “Phoenix” (Alessa Records).

The fact that Swantje Lampert and her two bandmates Karl Hodas (double bass) and Christian Eberle (drums) understand how to carve their own musical paths through the world of jazz was already demonstrated in a very convincing way on their 2020 debut. With “Phoenix” the trio now seamlessly follows up on their debut work and once again brings out a jazz sound that breaks with the classic tone in a refreshing way and sets exciting musical accents, which is partly due to the idiosyncratic line-up . For example, there is no harmony instrument at all. There is no lack of one, because Lampert, Hodas and Eberle understand perfectly how to completely fill the available space with their creative and powerful playfulness.

The numbers of the trio sound very varied in form and tempo, rhythmically demanding and complex in their melody, and yet a forward-looking groove unfolds in them, which it is difficult for the listener to resist. The musical language Swantje create, develop their very own vibe. Although this is rooted in the jazz of Coltrane, it grows into other musical worlds in an exciting way. In doing so, he develops an extremely atmospheric and at the same time very casual touch that really appeals and gives the whole story its special charm.

With “Phoenix” Swantje Lampert and her band have definitely created an album that contains everything that makes exciting contemporary jazz. It has become a piece of music that offers a lot of exciting and interesting things and invites you to delve deeper into it.
