The Weezil Malone Band from western Michigan has taken five years to produce a follow-up to their 2017 CD 'Hell Train'. The band consists of veteran Larry 'Weezil Malone' Fitzgerald, who brings takes care of vocals, bassist Dave Alves and drummer Karl Schwantz. On a few tracks we find saxophonist Dan Giacobassi, who has a modest, often accompanying role in the whole. Their newly released album 'Desert Drive-In' was recorded in April 2022 at River City Studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Weezil Malone Band takes a firm approach to the blues, immediately apparent with the opening track 'All Over Again', which is built on a solid boogie foundation. Larry Fitzgerald is not afraid to add a good portion of distortion to his sound. His voice sound is clear and firm with a wonderfully raw edge. He feels comfortable in groovy funky work and solid rocking shuffles, which are sometimes a bit more light-footed (Take It Away) or with beautiful melodic riffs (I Slowed Down). All songs are self-written and tell about experiences Larry has had recently. On the closing track 'Enough Is Enough', Larry slides the slide around his finger, which creates even more variation on the album. All in all a solid groovy album that never gets boring.
