The violin – that versatile instrument that dominated European music, especially orchestral music, until the 1950s – was developed between 1500 and 1550 in the workshops of violin makers around the three northern Italian cities of Mantua, Brescia and Cremona. It was the result of solid craftsmanship and a shrewd understanding of the physical possibilities.
