Gentle, bop-influenced Latin jazz from Cal Tjader in 1959.
This excellent album by vibraphonist Cal Tjader(1925-82) combines two LPs titled 'Concert by the Sea', Vols. 1 & 2 recorded in Carmel on April 20, 1959 as a preview for the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival.
With Tjader(vibes) were Paul Horn(flute, alto sax); Lonnie Hewitt(piano); Al McKibbon(bass); Willie Bobo(drums, timbales) & Mongo Santamaria(bongos, percussion).
The eleven tracks include compositions by Sonny Rollins, Mongo Santamaria, Lonnie Hewitt, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Cal Tjader plus several standards.
Although there's nothing profound on this 78-minute album the gentle, enjoyable bop-influenced Latin jazz is recommended to anyone wanting just one Cal Tjader album in their collection.
