Before There Was Sound is an album by American jazz saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, recorded in 1965, but released only in 2011 on the Nessa Records label. The album features the earliest available recordings of the work of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), recorded shortly after the organization's first meeting in May 1965 and about a year before Mitchell's debut album Sound. This quartet, consisting of trumpeter Fred Perry, bassist Malachi Favors and drummer Alvin Fielder, had been in existence for almost a year before they gathered at Fielder's instigation in the studio of radio station WUCB. "Mr. Freddie" is dedicated to the trumpeter. "Jar Jar" in honor of Joseph Jarman. - Wiki
Peter Margasak's review of "Down Beat" says: "It's incredible, carefully rehearsed and elaborated music that has only become less radical because of what followed, but in 1965 it would have blown minds."
