You can tell that Hobart Willis (aka Chris Clark) was weaned on punk rock, because it's that kind of bristling energy that he and his colleagues bring to the honky tonk blueprint on Full Amigo Flavor. But make no mistake: This group is filled with pure, bar-brawling honky tonkers with a distinct bolt of Tex-Mex running through the proceedings. (In fact, you can feel the ghost of Doug Sahm all over this album.) Giving these numbers a huge kick in the pants is the twin-guitar attack of Dave Quick (formerly of Jack Black) and Tim Barnes (Trailer Bride). On this effort, North Carolinians Hobart Willis & the Back Forty take a huge leap forward from the more straight-ahead honky tonk of their debut EP, packing the appropriately titled Full Amigo Flavor with timeless classic country echoes, Southwestern flourishes, and heady doses of Bakersfield sound and rockabilly.
