Whettman Chelmets - Koppen (2023) [Hi-Res]

Koppen is a sprawling work exploring the divisions conceptually placed upon the daily, the mundane -- the things that are experienced and not the things in and of themselves. Based around the concepts of the Koppen classification system which divides the planet into different climate areas, Chelmets here divides sounds into the beautiful, the grotesque, the anxious, and the calm, often all within the same track, highlighting the inherent structural, non-natural forces at play when placing the world into comfortable shapes of understanding.
Working primarily through modular synth, the sounds here are tactile and physical. Field recordings include wind chimes from the yard and various sounds from The Gathering Place, a Tulsa, Oklahoma park, taken a year before relocating to the area. Composed work is also found here, starting with an opening track fugue and finding different 12 tone, FM melodies sneaking into the mix. The track titles are climate classifications used in the Koppen system.
