One of Los Angeles' top young pianists, Josh Nelson also emerges on Let It Go as a fine accompanist. His originals are successful at stimulating the musicians, although none are destined to become standards. Best is his "Introspection on 401," a fiery yet thoughtful jazz waltz featuring tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake. The one standard of the set, "Love Letters," features some fine straight-ahead blowing by Nelson and Blake that overshadows some of the more obscure material. Guitarist Anthony Wilson is an asset whenever he appears. Sara Gazarek makes a guest appearance on "Leaving Here," one of two songs that add a string quartet. The tenor/piano duet on "Abandon Post" is a high point. Overall, this is a thoughtful and at times introspective set of fresh if not overly memorable new music. © Scott Yanow
