James Knight was born in Miami, Florida where he started playing drums around the early age of 2 years old and went on to become a member of a Caribbean band at the early age of 6 years old. Around the age of fourteen he began to pick up the guitar that his younger brother Leslie L. Lewis had purchase from a music store in the downtown area of Miami, Florida. By the time (Billy James Lewis aka James Knight) was 15 years old he began to play guitar for top name artists like Sam & Dave, Betty Wright, Clarence Reed, Gwen McCray, Frankie Beverly (of the group Maze) and Ben E. King, and the list goes on. At 19 years old James Knight decided to travel a different past to stardom he form the group James Knight & the Butlers and began to travel from Miami, Florida to Northern Canada and the Newfoundland’s. James Knight and the Butlers, became a over night success doing concerts with performers such as John Lee Hooker, The Chamber Brothers, The Persuaders, Muddy Waters , James Brown, Joe Simon and Joe Tex, etc,. James Knight and the Butlers, recorded the album the "BLACK KNIGHT" in 1970"s. James Knight was a songwriter / lead vocalist, who really barks it out there. They had a heavy funk sound and James Knight was their front man. It’s a gritty, hard, southern soul sound that peaked just before the disco invasion. Apparently, James Knight & the Butlers only made this one album The Black Knight in the early seventies which include such songs as "Funky Cat", "I love You", "Save Me", Just My Love For You", "Fantasy World", "Cotton Candy", "Flying' High" and "Uncle Joe". Other songs that were recorded by James Knight & the Butlers, "There Goes My Baby", "Get Funky", "EL Chicken", "NOTHIN", "There goes My Baby" (instruct mental), "Space Guitar", and "Baby Please, Pretty Please", and then went on to other adventure's. Sounds a little like James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sly & the Family Stone, The Doors, The Guess Who, Three dog night, Buddy Miles, The Barclay’s and Archie Bell and the Drills. James Knight & the Butlers was one of South Florida top rated band of the rock and funk era and there group performance was a site to see.
