Organist Jeff Palmer, who contributed all ten selections to this swinging CD, shows Jimmy Smith's influence in spots, but his sound tends to be a bit different and he enjoys playing eccentric pieces with augmented chord changes. It is to Palmer's credit that, although many of these originals are purposely blues-based, the end results are quite unpredictable and distinctive. Teamed with guitarist John Abercrombie, Vincent Herring (on alto and soprano), and drummer Bob Leto, Palmer is quite democratic in allocating solos. All of the musicians sound inspired in this setting, with Herring getting away from the Cannonball Adderley role model that sometimes overshaodws his own style. The only flaws to the release are the liner notes, which are sketchy and poorly written, unlike the dynamic music. Fans of modern jazz organ will want this set.
