Montreal’s five-piece country-folk band, The Wildwood Family, has unveiled their first collection of English songs with their sophomore album release Random Number.
“We wanted to write a road trip album. Something that would fit with the old covers of The Carter Sisters that we’ve been playing for years, but with our own spin on it,” explained the band. “The themes are centered around womanhood: moving away from the city to get a better life, having your destiny in your own hands and all the questioning that goes with it. Dealing with grief. The need to be free, and sometimes to be selfish!”
The album kicks off with the mesmerizing single, “When Rain Turns Into Snow.” The lyrics vividly convey a sense of isolation, where the absence of street lights, neighbors, and everyday signs creates a powerful backdrop for self-reflection and transformation. What sets this song apart is its emotional depth, as lines like “You’re too far to let go” resonate with those navigating significant life changes. The song’s open-endedness encourages listeners to delve into their own personal struggles and growth, while the repetition of “When rain turns into snow” serves as a thematic thread that guides us through a narrative journey from solitude to embracing change. This track is a true standout, combining evocative storytelling and a captivating atmosphere that leaves a lasting impact.
“Devil’s Crush” is a folk song that’s as unapologetically honest as it is catchy. With a bold opening line, “You’re the devil’s crush, you ain’t good for me,” it immediately captures the thrilling yet perilous nature of a passionate relationship. The recurring refrain, “I’m falling, I’m falling,” emphasizes the all-consuming intensity of the connection and the accompanying heartache. Its infectious melody and rhythm make it a compelling, hard-to-resist track that skillfully explores the highs and lows of love. “Devil’s Crush” leaves an indelible mark with its candid depiction of the complexities within fiery relationships.
“Random Number,” the album’s namesake, is a folk masterpiece that delves into the universal themes of purpose and the allure of taking chances. The song masterfully captures the sensation of feeling adrift in one’s thoughts, yearning for freedom. Its recurring refrain, “Putting your faith on some random number, Change your destiny for a dollar, Don’t trade it all for a joker,” strikes a chord with its poignant portrayal of uncertainty and the gamble of destiny. With its deep emotional resonance, “Random Number” prompts introspection and invites listeners to ponder their life choices and aspirations, solidifying its place as a captivating gem within the folk music landscape.
“Long Long Road,” my personal favorite on the album, is a folk gem filled with infectious vocal harmonies. This track propels you on a dynamic journey of self-discovery and unwavering determination. Its lively rhythm and uplifting melody create a whirlwind of energy, perfectly encapsulating the feeling of being trapped in life’s constant whirl. The catchy chorus, “It’s a long long road, where do I belong, finding my way home, a place that I know,” strikes a chord with anyone who’s sought their true path, making this song a standout in the folk genre.
“Random Number” is a mesmerizing album that effortlessly marries evocative lyrics, diverse themes, and unforgettable melodies, making each track an exceptional and unforgettable journey. It doesn’t just serenade you; it beckons you to embark on your personal odyssey of self-discovery and contemplation.
