In the 19th century there appeared in the Swedish province of Dalecarlia so called curbitz painters. They were naivists who staged, in strong colours, the happenings of the Holy Bible in the hamlets and villages of their own time and locality, dressing their biblical characters in the clothes they themselves and their neighbours were wearing. Nils Lindberg can be termed a modern curbitz painter although his media is music. The folklore is the basic element, the strokes of his musical brush mirror the present time.
