On his latest solo effort, «Duality», Terje teams up with the great French pianist, long time friend Christian Jacob. Jacob has lived in the USA since 1983 and is one of LA’s leading jazz pianists. He is a Concord jazz recording artist and is currently working with Flora Purim, among others. Terje and Christian played together in saxophonist Tommy Smith’s group «Forward Motion» in the mid 1980’s.
This bass – piano duo recording will please jazz listeners who favor strong melodies, harmonies and improvisation performed with a high degree of interplay. The musical material consists of 6 originals and 4 standards / traditionals specially chosen to fit this duo setting. Though Terje Gewelt primarily plays acoustic bass on this recording, he is also featured on the electric Fender jazz bass.
«Duality» is intimate chamber jazz at its best. This is inspired, warm and optimistic music which can be enjoyed over and over again.
«This intimate recording with pianist Christian Jacob showcases Gewelt’s gorgeous tone, thoughtful accompaniment, and melodic solo voice. Thanks to his sensitive touch, his Fender excels even in a traditionally acoustic duo setting. The textures are moody and the harmonies soothing, but this is no smooth jazz – it’s perfect chill-out music for the musically aware.»
