Jon O’Bergh—pianist and author—continues to evolve musically and sonically. He’s experimental, expressive, and unbound by categories, exploring genres from rock to avant-garde, from world beat to jazz, from contemplative piano to Laurie Anderson-style storytelling. Dubbed the Jedi of Cool, O’Bergh has released eleven albums and recorded with the jazz-funk fusion band Gemini Soul. Each album features a different side of O'Bergh's electic tastes. Born in Long Beach, California, O’Bergh grew up playing the piano. He graduated from the University of California at Irvine, where he studied piano performance and composition. Later, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he wrote songs for television and concert music. His composition Timescape 2 for piano and violin introduced his music to San Francisco audiences in a concert broadcast by National Public Radio station KQED. As a solo artist, O’Bergh’s first release Millennial Landscapes (1998) reached #2 on the NAV Chart. His follow-up release Carta (2000) reached #1, and his fourth release Meditations from a Lost World (2002) reached #3. In 2005, O’Bergh joined forces with bassist and recording artist Andre Ajamu Akinyele to form the jazz-funk fusion band Gemini Soul. For four years and five albums, Gemini Soul became known for their vibrant performances and cyber jazz musical explorations. Their fourth album "The Nefertiti Xperience" reached #37 on Amazon’s "Bestselling Hot New & Future Music Releases" chart, and their fifth album "Dark Skin Babies: The Movement" reached #15 on the same chart. O’Bergh is also the author of two innovative books that incorporate music and stories: "Song of Fire," a personal look at the role of music in life; and "A Book of Hauntings," a collection of five ghost stories. With Akinyele he co-authored "Elliptical: The Music of Meshell Ndegeocello," the first comprehensive look at this multi-Grammy-nominated artist.
