The Island of Misfit Toys - I Made You Something (2015)

The Chicago nonet's second full-length album, with the understated title I Made You Something, is even more sprawling and passionate than prior releases, with a theatrical bent that borders on rock musical. Leader Anthony Sanders yearns and vents atop instrumentation that adds woodwinds, brass, melodic percussion, violin, accordion, and more to acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, bass, and often punky drums for a dynamic and eccentric soundscape. Styles range from indie folk ("Singing") to rap and choral ("A Healthier Olympics") to screeching punk-pop ("Architects"), sometimes within the same song. The unifiers are Sanders' articulate delivery and angsty narratives, which focus the album on a volatile protagonist.
