On this double CD, Carsten Zündorf dedicates himself to a milestone in baroque organ music: Bach's “Third Part of the Clavier Exercise”. The collection of various chorale arrangements published in 1739 (to mark the 200th anniversary of Martin Luther's sermon in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig) is considered one of the most important musical interpretations of Martin Luther's theology and songs by Johann Sebastian Bach. The “Clavier Exercise”, also called the “Organ Mass” by Albert Schweitzer, is viewed as a highlight in the history of organ composition, not least because it provides a deep insight into Bach's theological worldview and its musical implementation. Surrounded by a prelude and fugue in E flat major, Bach set the Lutheran Missa brevis (Kyrie and Gloria) as well as Martin Luther's catechism chorales on the Ten Commandments, Creed, Our Father, Baptism, Confession and Last Supper. The chorale arrangements are highly complex works of art that contain a symbolic level, full of rhetorical figures and theological references.
With the Flentrop organ in St. Marien, Osnabrück, Carsten Zündorf has an extremely beautiful sounding instrument that is ideal for this work.
