Amirtha Kidambi's third full-length with her band Elder Ones, 'New Monuments' was informed by Black American liberation music and Carnatic classical sounds, a revolutionary shriek that blends instrumental virtuosity with electronic textures and electro-acoustic treatments. Backed up by Jason Nazary who plays drums and modular synths, Eva Lawitts on bass and effects, Lester St. Louis on cello and electronics and Matt Nelson on soprano sax and effects, Kidambi plays harmonium and synths and handles vocals. 'New Monuments' is her most charged set yet, spurred on by the world's parallel protests and continued injustices. Her musical response is to channel the urgency of vintage free jazz, hybridizing it with Indian elements and smart electronic calls. It's an album where glassy synthetic textures flow rapidly into dextrous instrumental outbursts, everything held together by Kidambi's nimble, adaptable vocals. On the title track, she shifts from a distorted, punkish rap to a rapturous wail, and on 'Farmer's Song', spins a mantra around brushy drums and wormish horns.
