Pianist Michele Faber is based in the Los Angeles area (now Barcelona, Spain). A fine player whose style has been touched by Bill Evans' sensitivity and chord voicings, Faber has a gentle approach yet can swing hard when called for. She tends to sound quite relaxed at every tempo, including on this set cooking renditions of "I Should Care" and "Autumn Leaves." Faber is teamed up with bassist Bill Torma and drummer Chuck Glave for nine standards (including Kenny Barron's lesser-known "Tragic Magic") and an original. The three musicians sound very comfortable with each other. The pianist was quite delighted to have the opportunity to record at home on her own instrument, and the renditions were played straight through, as if the musicians were performing in a club, with no multiple takes, editing or overdubbing. Highlights of the date include "If I Should Lose You," "Lament," Benny Carter's "Only Trust Your Heart" (which in recent years has finally become a standard) and Thelonious Monk's "I Mean You." An excellent effort, this CD gives listeners a fine sampling of Michele Faber's playing.
