I grew up playing the blues. My mom was my first teacher. She is an incredible singer. She sang with the likes of John Mayall, Allen Tousant, Fabian, Steve Cropper.... Then my dad, Papa Don McMinn was my next teacher. He taught me when NOT TO PLAY!!!! Very important lesson.
I played in the house band at The Rum Boogie Cafe on world famous Beale Street for almost 9 years. In that time I was lucky enough to play behind some really great artist like Rufus Thomas, Sir Mack Rice, Chick Willis, Joe South, Greg Allman, John Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, Mojo Buford.... After leaving Beale Street, I started working with oldies acts like: The Coasters, The Drifters, The Shirells, Bowser(Sha Na Na) and The Stingrays, The Tokens... Now its 2009 and I am lucky enough to be working with some of my favorite people in the whole world. My first call always goes to the best female blues singer in the world, Reba Russell. She is awesome. She has more soul in her than a 9 foot tennis shoe. She sang backup on U2s "Rattle and Hum", Jimmy Thackery "Sinner Street", Debra Coleman "A Soft Place To Fall", Bernard Allison "Across the Water"....
I also get to work from time to time with my life long friend, Mr. George "Mojo" Buford. Mojo played in Muddy Waters Band at different times from 1959 until Muddys untimely death in 1983. He was his last harmonica player and musical director. Muddy was like a father to Mojo and taught him a lot about the blues. Now we sometimes team up with his old bandmate, Mr. John Primer and go out as "A tribute to Muddy Waters" featuring Mojo Buford & John Primer. John was also with Muddy for the last 4 years of Muddys life. Muddy was also like a father to John. John opened most of Muddys shows. Lastly, I still work with my dad and brother forming Papa Don McMinn & Nightrain. www.donmcminn.com . We are a family power blues trio. We have been playing together forever, literally.
