Colin Babcock is a trombonist, composer, improvisor, and teacher from Pickerington, Ohio based in New York City. He actively performs in many different genres, from contemporary classical music to jazz to pop and everything in between. Colin’s compositions include original works and arrangements for brass ensembles, improvisation based pieces, and electronic music. He graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2020, studying Trombone Performance with M. Dee Stewart, Dr. Denson Paul Pollard, and Peter Ellefson. Colin released “Circle” in 2020 and “Concrete” in 2024, albums of original compositions and improvisations for trombone and electronics. In NYC, Colin has established a wide-reaching freelance career, performing with New York Composers Orchestra, at The New York City Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, So Wrong It’s Right, Brownstone Brass Quintet, William Parker’s Little Huey’s Pocket Watch, The Colin Babcock Quintet, The Real Stormin’ Norman Band, The Mostly Modern Festival in the town of Middelburg in The Netherlands, Brass By the Slice, Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, S. E. M. Ensemble, The Shrine Big Band, Sexteto La Fe, and much more. In 2021 Colin began teaching with Brooklyn Conservatory of Music’s Music Partners division, bringing music education to students all across the city. His teaching philosophy is to show the next generation the beauty and power that music has at both the individual and societal level, to help his students develop practice strategies that apply to all skills, and that anyone can make art.
