Stick In The Wheel - Ruins EP (2024) [Hi-Res]

Approaching folk music with ears to tradition and eyes to its constructed nature, Stick in the Wheel might by the ur-Ley Lines artist. Their music is both renewal and critique, working with old materials to bring attention to how their friction with modern sounds sheds light on contradictions that transcend time. Drawing from the ancient manuscript “The Ruin” from The Exeter Book, the duo set musings on the decay of a 9th century city to an apocalyptic grime beat. The other two tracks rework medieval poem “The World Is An Illusion” and English folk song “The Cuckoo.” Rounding out the EP are remixes of Ainu musician OKI, English singer Jim Ghedi, and Circassian folk band Jrpjej, each imbued with wisps of reverb and subterranean bass weight.
